What Do the Different Language Proficiency Levels for CEFR Signify?

The CEFR or Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is an international standard for classifying language ability. The CEFR uses a six-point scale to measure language proficiency.
Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Proficiency Ranks
The six levels of language learning and proficiency according to the CEFR are –
1. Basic 1 – The Basic 1 Level in CEFR indicates basic language ability where the language learner can introduce themselves in the language and ask/respond to simple questions.

2. Basic A2 – The next Basic Level signifies that the person who has been accredited with it can carry out simple interactions in the language. They are acquainted with the frequently used expressions in the language and can navigate the conversation in areas of immediate relevance.

3. Intermediate B1 – Intermediate B1 CEFR language proficiency level states that the person is able to generally communicate in the language with natives during travel to the area. They can also understand communication and convey their experiences related to work, school, and leisure in the language.

4. Intermediate B2 – Individual with an Intermediate B2 CEFR qualification in a language can fluently and spontaneously communicate in the target language without much strain.

5. Advanced C1 – Can process and produce demanding and complex text in the target language. An Advanced C1 level language learner can use the target language with flexibility in their communications.

6. Advanced C2 – Advanced C2 language learners can tell the inherent nuances of expressions used in phrases of the language. They can summarize the information received in the language either from a textual or verbal source and even reconstruct them.
