ChatGPT Study Mode Launches Globally, With Multilingual Boost From India

OpenAI officially rolled out Study Mode in ChatGPT on July 29, 2025, marking a major milestone in AI-powered education. Unlike traditional Q&A tools, Study Mode is designed to guide students step by step, encouraging active thinking, reflection, and structured learning. The feature is now available for Free, Plus, Pro, and Team users, with ChatGPT Edu support coming soon.

India’s Role in Shaping Study Mode

Although Study Mode is a global launch, India played a central role in its development. The feature was beta-tested extensively by Indian students, including those preparing for high-difficulty exams like the IIT entrance tests. Their feedback shaped the tool’s scaffolding, personalization, and multimodal design, ensuring it works in diverse learning environments.

Multilingual Learning From Day One

One of Study Mode’s standout features is multilingual accessibility. The tool supports 11 Indian languages and integrates voice, image, and text inputs. With its mobile-first interface, students in both urban and rural areas can access high-quality learning resources without the need for costly devices or fast internet.

Leah Belsky, OpenAI’s Vice President of Education, highlighted the vision behind Study Mode:

“Study Mode encourages students to reflect, engage, and build knowledge—not just memorize.”

The tool provides:

  • Personalized hints and step-by-step guidance

  • Knowledge checks to reinforce learning

  • Organized lessons tailored to student levels

Looking Ahead: From Inclusion to Impact

OpenAI plans to expand Study Mode with:

  • Video-based responses

  • Goal tracking tools

  • Personalized lessons based on uploaded files and past study history

The company is also collaborating with Stanford’s SCALE Initiative to research the long-term impact of AI on K–12 education. Built-in safety protocols ensure that the tool is not misused in academic contexts.

Why It Matters

By combining a global rollout with local customization, OpenAI demonstrates how AI can drive inclusive and scalable education. With strong adoption in India and multilingual support from day one, ChatGPT Study Mode is set to reshape how students worldwide learn and prepare for the future.
